What is New York Style Pizza?
Most people really do enjoy eating pizza yet they may not be aware of what pizza style they are eating. Pizza comes in all different shapes and sizes and many times that are do to the pizza style. There are many different pizza styles and most true pizza eaters have their favorite. Yet there are some who have no idea of the different pizza styles and how they originated. Today I will discuss New York Style Pizza and explain why this is such a popular type of pizza and how it came to be.
History of New York Style Pizza
Most people are aware that the pizza as we recognize today first originated in Italy. Pizza can be traced back to Naples, Italy when in 1889 Queen Margherita was visiting Naples and was served one of the first pizzas which were created to resemble the Italian flag. She really enjoyed this new creation and pizza soon became common in Naples.
Now pizza was a common food item but was looked at a cheap Italian peasant food that only those will little money would eat. Nonetheless pizza was to be found and soon after in 1905 the first pizzeria in theUnited States opened inManhattan’s Little Italy section ofNew York. Lombardi’s was the first pizzeria inAmericaand is whereNew Yorkstyle pizza originated.
What made Lombardi’s so special is that they used a coal burning pizza oven that quickly cooked pizzas at 900 degrees F. It was here that the characteristics that make up a New York style pizza came into play. A true New York style pizza is thin crust much thinner than the common pizza we see everywhere today. Furthermore New York style pizza is cooked well done so that the cheese turns to a golden brown color rather than remaining white color. Anything less than this is not a true New York pizza and should not be confused with the original American pizza style.
The Popularity of New York Style Pizza
Even though Lombardi’s open in 1905, pizza was not a popular food item the United States until well after WWII. You see many American soldiers were stationed in Italy, precisely Naples during the war and soon discovered the very affordable food called pizza. They loved it and when the war the ended the American soldiers came home telling family and friends about this wonderful food called pizza that was so common among the working class in Naples. From that we started to see pizzerias opening throughout the United States and in the 1950’s most major American cities had pizzerias and pizza started to become a popular American food item.
Now do understand that since pizza was still unfamiliar to most Americans there was no set way to make it. When a pizzeria opened up in a major market like Chicago they would create a Chicago style pizza that was reflective of Chicago food scene. This is why you have so many different pizza styles today yet the New York style pizza is the original style in theUnited States and one of the most popular styles.
New York Style Pizza Today
Nowadays most pizzeria serves some type of variation of the New York style pizza. In many cases most pizzerias make a pizza that is neither as thin nor cooked as well done as a New York pizza but more or less it resembles the New York style pizza. The fist New York pizzas were simple and topped off with tomato sauce, cheese and basil leafs. Over time new and unique toppings have been added. Still one of the best pizzas around is the traditional New York style pizza which is commonly sold by the slice. Next time you are in the mood for pizza order a true New York style pizza and eat it like they do in New York, which is folded over long ways while it is still hot. Most will agree will agree that the best pizza in Las Vegas is on that is reflects a true New York style pizza.
